WHAT TO EXPECT:

Appointments are usually scheduled for a 50-60 minute session once a week.  Your therapist will discuss if more or less than one appointment a week is needed. This appointment is set  specifically for you. Please call us 24 hours in advance if you must change your appointment. You may also ask if a video session is available if you cannot physically make your appointment due to weather or other circumstances. Payment is expected at time of service.

First Few Sessions: Your therapist will gather information and may ask you to complete assessments to gain greater understanding of what brought you to counseling and to learn more about you. These sessions are helpful to determine if this is a good fit, begin to develop a therapeutic relationship, and to set some initial goals for counseling.

Benefit and Risks: Please know that mental health counseling has well-researched benefits but also may carry some risks. Symptoms of sadness, depression, grief, anxiety, negative thought patterns, and emotional dysregulation may decrease as a result of the work you and your counselor do together. You may gain greater insights, find solutions, increase coping skills, and improve satisfaction in your relationships. We also know that change takes effort and  talking about or recalling difficult experiences  or memories can increase discomfort. Problems might seem to intensify while the focus is on them.  Finally, even though we strive to provide the best practices in mental health, there are no guaranteed results of therapy. Your therapist can talk more about the benefits and risks as well as how to get the most out of your sessions.

Length of Counseling: Although it is difficult to predict how long your counseling will last, but this can be discussed with your therapist as to the best estimate. You may take a break from counseling, quit or ask to be transferred to another counselor. Discussing these concerns with your counselor can help make the transition smooth and help determine the best course of action. Even if you complete your counseling goals, you may return at a later time for additional services based on the availability of your therapist.
